Jon Charles Skillman


JON CHARLES SKILLMAN of Arcade, NY, formerly of Cedarville, OH, died Sunday, February 13 at Charlotte House Comfort Care in North Java, NY, after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was born on December 8, 1945 to the late Richard Dean and Charlotte Lorene Smith Skillman in Portsmouth, OH.

The family moved to Marion, OH when Jon was age 5. Jon attended Pleasant School. After graduating high school Jon went onto college at Cedarville College (now University) in Cedarville, OH. While there he was given the position of student manager of the college radio station and later started working at WEEC in nearby Springfield, OH. While at Cedarville College he met and married Sylvia Kay Griffin, who survives. Jon was drafted into the Vietnam War shortly after his college graduation and went to work in armed forces radio in Delta Junction, Alaska at the cold weather testing center. He and his wife enjoyed their time in Alaska but moved to Indiana after he was done in the Army and later, they moved back to Cedarville, OH. The couple returned to Alaska, this time the town of Bethel, to work as missionaries from 1998-2007. His career in radio came full circle when he returned to Cedarville, OH and worked, once again, for WEEC in Springfield until 2021. In early 2021, they moved to Arcade, NY to live with their son and his family.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Sylvia Kay (Griffin) Skillman, his son Charles (Elissa) Skillman of Arcade, NY, his daughter, Charlotte (Jordan) Forseth of Vancouver, British Columbia, his grandchildren Preston Skillman of Bath, NY, Abigail, Bethany, Titus, Tabitha, and Vivien Skillman of Arcade, NY.

A memorial visitation will be held on Saturday, February 19, 2022 from 10-11 am in the Grace Baptist Church, 109 N Main St., Cedarville, OH.

A celebration of Jon’s life will begin at 11 am in the church with Pastor Byron Shearer officiating.
